Can Small Business Saturday be even more successful?

As most individuals already know, Small Business Saturday was a winner for local companies. It spurred consumers to spend approximately $5.5 million with independent merchants, creating more work for small business accounting.

In many ways, the day was a success due to its sponsors, who mounted a huge campaign to get shoppers to visit small businesses, PR Week writes. For example, credit card company American Express (AmEx), which created the event, offered its customers a $25 credit for purchasing in their community.

Furthermore, it convinced well-known figures such as New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg to publicly support the shopping day, and it paid off. According to the National Federation of Independent Business, more than 3.2 million people liked the Facebook event and around 213,000 related tweets were sent in November.

AmEx has a winning initiative in Small Business Saturday, but that doesn’t mean it can rest on its laurels,” PR Week explains. “The company will have to keep its discounts compelling enough to make consumers ignore the convenience of ecommerce sites or the selection of major retailers ? and ? continue to reach both young and old consumers.”

Small Business Saturday follows Black Friday during Thanksgiving week.
